Seven Card Stud: Intermediate Strategy (Continued)

We have already covered the basics as far as seven card stud, and as you know this is not an easy game, especially if you are playing for money or at a big tournament, even more if it’s H.O.R.S.E one. When it comes to strategy, seven card stud is highly complicated, because of 2 factors:

- Most of the times you are going to be called

- Most people don’t really know how to play the game

This can be beneficial as well as harmful for your play; while it can dramatically increase your winnings, it can also give your opponents chances to get and catch a good hand.

You must watch your opponents open cards, and act depending on this. If you have a possible flush count the cards that could help you complete the hand, let’s say you have 3 spades. This means you will need 2 out of the pending 11 cards in the deck that are a spade. However, if your opponents’ show 4 of those spades in their hands on their open cards, this is not a good bet, most likely you are not going to be able to catch the flush. The same happens with high cards or cards you need for straights or better.

Another important factor for you to consider is the bankroll you will have to bring in into a table, when you play at ring games that is. Most experts suggest at least 10 to 20 times, but for these games we suggest at least 40 to 60 times the stakes, as you will be tempted to call more bets and raises as the hand goes.

When playing a tournament however, it is important you don’t over pay, if by the 5th street you don’t have good chances of catching a good hand, fold it, don’t risk more chips. These small chips can cost you at the end of the day and can decide whether you are kept in or out.

It is important to maintain a constant in all poker games: practice. The more you play, the more you will know how to react towards the different scenarios that show up at a table. You will not only know how to play your cards, but how your opponents will play, even if it is the first time you play against them, they will match the gaming style of a player you previously faced.

All we can suggest is play very smartly; do not try to steal pots like in other games as it is very likely you will get caught. Bring enough funds into the table to pay the raises and bets from other players. And always, always look at the cards you hold and the open ones from your opponents. Good luck at the tables and just remember it’s not worth risking it all in one hand you could get than in a hand you already have!

Trading season is running

That is right, just like many other sports poker trading season is running. But you might ask what do we mean by trading? Well just like in football or baseball professional players are been captured to represent franchises that are worth millions! Based on their skill, media presence and even popularity on the web, pros are been drafted by the biggest poker sites to represent them; but why? Simple, the WSOP is just around the corner and we are expecting a lot of action from these players.

But why is it important to have a professional player representing a site? Not only it represents an investment as most poker sites share winnings with the sponsored players, but also it signifies a media presence campaign. Look at it this way, if a poker player with a known name appears in a worldwide television broadcasted event with your logo on their shirt or hats, many people who look at the player play, will go online and search for the site. And on top of it the investments are not that big, of course depending on the player.

Now, we say it is open and running as we have already seen the first movements been done for the past few months. David Williams, a very solid poker player previously represented by Bodog has rupture its relationship with the multimillion company in what we think are efforts to go after one of the big ones. In his spot Amanda Musumeci is now the carrier of the brand in her chest.

Another big movement has been the poker young vixen Annette Obrestad a.k.a Annette_15, the winner of the WSOPE and said to have won several tournaments in PokerStars without looking at her pocket hands, not only showing it is possible to win using just skill, but also proving that she is one of the best, has recently signed with FullTilt on their team along with players like Phil Ivey, Jesus Fergusson, Mike Matusow and Gus Hansen. She will be part of the Red Pros team with very talented and skillful players like Mandy Baker, Svetlana Gromenkova among other top poker players she will have by her side.

Another consequence of the “draft” has been the exposure of other pros at mass media alternatives. This week we saw Annie Duke and Phil Hellmuth on Good Morning America, where they set a small poker table to show how this business can be fun and lucrative if you have the skills and experience of both players. We also remember Ms. Duke during her role on the Celebrity Apprentice show where she was runner up and helped make her name even bigger.

So poker maniacs, keep your eyes and ears open, during the next few weeks for the WSOP to start you will see a lot of players with great skill been involved with major and small poker sites. The big question is, or better the more than $10 Million Dollar question is: would this year be different and we will finally have a poker pro champion?

Is it worth playing live poker tournaments?

Is it worth playing live poker tournaments?

The whole poker industry as we know is based on live poker tournaments, they are the biggest and the most popular, and now there are a lot of options for you to pick from depending on where you live. But is it really worth it? The answer is really up to you and up to what scale you are willing to play.

Professional poker players live “the dream” for many, but behind the luxuries and extensities of being a professional poker player, there is a world of stress and commitment with no comparison. Being a live poker player requires a lot more than just the will to do it. You need to invest a serious amount of hours and this is not an option for the average poker player. There are several factors you need to keep in mind:

Bankroll: The investment of being a poker player requires you to invest big portions of money. On online play is very simple as the investment can be a couple bucks, but if you want to play at a bigger scale we are talking a lot more than a couple hundred thousand dollars. This is the reason most poker players look for a sponsorship to cover their tournament entries.

Time: Another important factor when you play poker is time. Most poker tournaments and play involve hours of continuous play and traveling. If you are a family person this can seriously affect you, and even more if you have a normal job. It is not many people that can spare a week of their live to go and play poker. The journeys for a poker player are extensive, most of them live in hotels all round the world as there is a poker tournament every month. Today is Las Vegas, tomorrow is somewhere in Europe and the following week Latin America.

Winnings: As poker is a game of chance as it is of skill, there is always the uncertainty of not cashing in a tournament, only from 10% to 20% of players cash at a tournament. That means that out of 10 tournaments you play, you will cash out in 1 or 2 in average. And if you spend 20 hours in each, you will normally spend 200 hours of your time with a 20% chance of winning.

Prizes: The prizes that you can win at a tournament are big compared with most other sports. Millions are dealt in many tournaments such as the WSOP. But you need to consider the costs of you playing at these events: hotel accommodations, flight costs, taxes and many other costs that can affect significantly the amount you win.

Physical Integrity: Part of being a poker player is training your body and mind. It is not easy to play for 8 or 10 straight hours every day for 3 days in a row. The anxiety that comes with play also affects, so if you suffer of back aches or have vision problems this is something that you need to look into before enrolling into this world.

Bottom line, if you are willing to take all these points in consideration to do this at a mayor scale and you have what it takes go for it! But if not, then look to play short tournaments with a lower investment of your time and money. Your return can be higher if you win many small tournaments than just one big one.
